I believe laughter is the best medicine. It is even in Proverbs 15: 13, “a happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit.” Also in proverbs 15:15, “all the days of the oppressed are wretched, but the cheerful heart has a continually feast.” One more for ya, in proverbs 17:22 , ” a cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” (NIV)
So today, I want to tell you about laughter. I have suffered and I mean suffered from depression all my life. It was like groping around in a dark place with not even a glimmer of light. But somewhere along the lines I had always been taught that being a Christian is not fun. So I really didn’t want any part of that. I have noticed that there are a lot of people that still have those thoughts. They hear ya laughing and they immediately try to kill your joy. I know you have seen those kind of people. They even portray Jesus as a kind of person with no sense of humor. Me personally, I don’t believe that, not one bit at all. But have you ever really sat back and watched children? Kids are funny, oh my goodness. But really, the parents are even funnier.
My favorite author on kids and family was Erma Bombeck. She was so funny, y’all really need to read her books. I recommend that as a prescription for when life has y’all dragging the ground.
I was reading some of her articles just this morning and I was reminded of something that had happened in my own life with my kids. Everybody has a problem with the kids taking to much toilet paper. When you have as many kids as I did that could be a major issue with tissue. But have you ever just listened to yourself talk? I do now.
This particular day the kids had been wasting toilet paper. And by wasting, I mean wasting it. I screamed out in my bad mom voice,” if y’all don’t quit wasting that toilet paper, I am going to take it out of your asses “. The ones in the room looked at me and said, ” really, I would think about that first”.
Yep, I don’t recommend that.
